dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain)

Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful periods including menstrual cramps. Half of menstruating women experience pain during their periods. It is most often experienced during the first two days of the menstrual period and lessens as the flow continues.

Menstrual pain may occur in the lower abdomen, lower back, in the pelvic region or may radiate down the thighs and legs. For some women this pain can be debilitating and may interfere with daily living. Other symptoms that may occur in conjunction with the pain may include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headache, increased urination, and diarrhea.

Many women rely on conventional pain killers to treat the pain, birth control pills to mask the symptoms or some just suffer through the pain. Naturopathic Medicine offers an alternative to these drugs which may have adverse side effects. The results from our treatment may take longer than conventional medications, but they are long lasting and promote better overall health.

Menstrual cramps and pain may occur for varying reasons and may be associated with other underlying conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), adhesions, ovarian cysts, polyps, congenital malformations, or narrowing of the cervical opening, or it may be a more benign condition that occurs in absence of any of the above mentioned disorders.

Hormonal imbalance and toxicity, which are often at the root cause of menstrual pain, can often be corrected with dietary changes, improved nutrition, acupuncture, or specialized supplements. Naturopathic Medicine is an effective method for prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea.

By identifying and treating the root cause of the of your hormonal imbalance with nutritional support, botanical medicine, counseling, acupuncture and homeopathy, these symptoms can be prevented.
